To Protect and Serve

Jun 26 2008 Published by Eve under Unsorted

My favorite part of Thursday mornings. From The Erie Review:

Police responded to the 100 block of Northrup at 4:58 p.m., Monday, June 16, for report of a dog that was too skinny. After making the report, the neighbor chose to speak with the owner before having police respond.

At 9:58 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, police responded to the 700 block of Pierce Street for report of a possible burglary. The reporting party stated that they thought they heard a hunting whistle coming from downstairs. The officer searched the residence and did not find anything.

An anorexic dog and a burglar who breaks into houses and then blows a whistle before sneaking back out. Nothing like a little local news to make a person feel sane again.

The Fierce Fighter

Two weeks ago yesterday Frankie fell from the shower window. The fall was loud and violent but she didn’t utter a single whimper.

There wasn’t any debate — my kitty laying on the bathmat, the urine in the tub, the puking that followed — She was on her way to the emergency room within 20 minutes.

“We’ve done blood work. She’s pretty banged up. She fell because she’s sick, she’s not sick because she fell.”

“We’d like to keep her here for the night.”

“We’re not sure what these enzyme numbers mean. We’ll need to transfer her to the regular vet in the morning.”

“We’re finding new things in her blood work. Her x-rays look strange. We’ll do an ultrasound tomorrow. She’ll need to stay another night.”

“The results from the ultrasound are back. It doesn’t look good.”

“She has a day left….Maybe two. You have four options.”

“I know this is hard.”

Two weeks ago tomorrow we told the vet we’d like to bring our cat home for her last few days.

This morning she woke me up with a nudge. “Scratch my ears.” Like nothing sad had ever happened.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll call the vet. Maybe I’d rather not know.

How Not To Start A Morning

Jun 13 2008 Published by Eve under Unsorted

It’s always best to not start my morning with a bowl of soggy Rice Chex. It’s even better if the Rice Chex are not soggy because I didn’t pour the milk immediately before not dropping 6oz of canned tuna oil from the unpstairs loft onto the living room floor.

*the silence of realization*

*crack*

*sploosh*
